How to improve your mental health: Begin each day with Gratitude

Maintaining my mental wellbeing can be a challenge. It has been rough dealing with the ups and downs throughout my life. One minute I am in a chipper mood, and the next I'm feeling down and out. I know that having the right mindset is the first step towards having a better day. So I continue to work on it and encourage my clients as well.

Allowing the mind to be filled with thoughts of fear or dread will only keep you in that mental state. I don’t allow myself to stay there too long as it keeps me from being the amazing person I truly am. I’m getting better and better each day by starting with a few deep breaths and then taking time to mention what I am most grateful for in that moment. I take the first opportunity in the morning when I first wake up.

I speak it into the universe, “good morning, thank you for allowing me to wake up and here's to trying again, thank you for my health, my son, my family, thank you for the sun, for water, food, electricity…”

My list can go on, but I mainly mention at least 3-5 things I am thankful for.

Right in this moment, any thoughts of doom, dread, fear or frustration goes out of my mind as I am now focused on all of the amazing things I have right now in my life. There's a kindness and love that fills my world immediately as I remind myself of my blessings.

Later at some other point during the day I make a gratitude journal entry where I intentionally write out what I’m grateful for within the past 24hours.

Some amazing benefits of showing gratitude include:

  • It helps you to feel calm.
  • It can lower your stress levels and stress response.
  • It can help you focus on what is truly important to you.
  • It can help you gain a new perspective and what you truly appreciate already in your life.
  • It can help you gain clarity around your goals, what you want more or less of in your life.
  • It creates a personal safe zone for you free of judgement from others so you can express or write about anything its your outlet.
  • It allows you to become more self aware and learn more about yourself as you realize your blessings.
  • It can help pick you up when you are feeling down- read over some of the things you write for a reminder that you have some amazing things in your life.

It should take no more than 5-10 minutes, but spend as much time as you need to get your feelings out.
Try to make this an everyday habit by setting a reminder or keeping your journal where you are bound to see it and be reminded to write. i like to keep mine on the kitchen counter, or next to my bed. This way I see it and will be sure to pick it up.
Some days get busy and I may forget sometimes, but I simply pick back up when I remember. When I am traveling, i tend to use an app in my phone instead, but for me nothing beats writing it out in pencil. Do what works best for you.
Keep it as simple as you like. I sometimes go deeper really explaining why I am thankful for someone or something and try to explain how I feel. But I mainly keep it simple. I am thankful for the food I enjoyed today. I am thankful for my husband and my mom.

Either way, it usually feels really good to acknowledge my feelings, my blessings and my gifts. I gives me a restored sense of hope each day. It reminds me what matters to me and what I am striving for. I am grateful to have this ability, to be able to review my life, and learn more each day.

Miscarriage, unexpected: Help Coping with a loss

Finding out that I was pregnant was a joyful moment. I had all of the butterfly feelings in my stomach, eager and ready to embrace the journey of being pregnant again. We had our challenges unknowingly, trying to conceive for almost a year.   I knew something was different this time, I had actually remembered the day when I ovulated and what I felt that day. So when I saw my positive pregnancy test I was thrilled. I had recently found out my sex hormones were low, cortisol through the roof and I was feeling tired and  all out of whack, but somehow 2-3 weeks into some lifestyle changes and supplements, I was pregnant. I was ready to now start a new journey with my second child. It was a blessing and I was humbled. I felt grateful thinking I’d had a hard time doing this, but I fixed whatever my problems were. I did it again and that felt great.                          Then there were the stresses: all that we h...
